An old bar tender story tells: The Manhattan cocktail was
mixed for the first time in the Manhattan Club for Lady Randolph
Churchill (Winston’s mother) during a banquet to honor the
politician Samuel J. Tilden. In 1880 Churchill received a drink
bill worth over 240 pounds from R. Paine & Sons. This was,
at the time, enough to send a small army to death...
